Field hockey power rankings ? Week 5 | Varsity Insider

Another week and little change in the field hockey power rankings. Nos. 1-5 stayed the same with a trio of lower divisions squads fighting out to draws last week to remain on the bubble ? but close to bursting through into the top 5.

Tuesday?s Big Game, Middlebury at Esssex, should be a good battle that will have playoff-seeding implications.

As always, tell me your thoughts in the comments section.

Enjoy.

Through games played 10/10

1. South Burlington (9-2): Since losing to Middlebury, the Rebels have outscored opponents 10-2 in a trio of wins. Last week: 1.

2. Middlebury (7-1-1): The Tigers haven?t lost (7-0-1) since that 8-0 defeat at the hands of South Burlington in the season opener. Last week: 2.

3. Essex (4-2-3): The Hornets had their six-game unbeaten run halted by the team that last gave them a loss. Yep, those South Burlington Rebels. Last week: 3.

4. Woodstock (9-0): In a Division II showdown, Woodstock got the better of Windsor, ending the Yellow Jackets? perfect season. Last week: 4.

5. Colchester (5-3-2): After not scoring for four straight games (0-3-1), the Lakers have tallied five times during a three-game winning streak. Last week: 5.

On the bubble: Fit to be tied is the theme with the bubble teams this week ? Division III front runners Rice (8-0-2) and Missisquoi (8-1-2) were deadlocked in the teams? second meeting this season. The first game went to the Green Knights, who rallied to also earn a tie against Division II power Harwood (6-0-3). Harwood, by the way, also tied Missisquoi last week.

I've been working in the Burlington Free Press sports department as a copy editor and writer since Sept. 2007. I've been covering Vt. sports for the BFP since 2001. I also spent a year at the Times Argus in Barre (2004-05). I played soccer and ran track and field at Rice Memorial High School before I studied Journalism & Mass Communications at St. Michael's College. My love of high school sports, journalism and Vermont life has kept me in the Green Mountain state despite my sworn allegiance to New York teams: the Yankees, Giants, Knicks and Rangers.
