When we purchase organic produce, we buy it because we know that it?s grown without the use of pesticides or any other chemicals.? Pesticide residue has been found in to 70 ? 95% of food produced in the U.S. A large percentage of the fungicides, herbicides and insecticides used cause cancer and a variety of other illnesses. They increase risk of birth defects, nerve damage, Parkinson?s disease and even miscarriage.
The growing market for organic food and products has caught the eye of Big Food Companies, whose only goal is profit at the expense of consumers. Smaller organic companies are being swallowed up by food corporations that know consumers will pay more for organic products.
The sale of organic foods has increased by 20% every year since the early 90?s. Did you know that the majority of organic foods are created and produced by food companies that sell processed and packaged foods? The list below may shock you:
Kellogg?s ? Bear Naked, Kashi and Morning Star Farms
PepsiCo ? Naked Juice
Kraft ? Back to Nature
General Mills ? Cascadian Farm
Hain Celestial ? Earth?s best, spectrum organics, healthy valley
How do you know that the produce you buy at the supermarket is really organic? After all they look the same, with the exception of the sticker that can be removed and easily replaced. The numbers on the stickers on produce differentiate non organic from organic produce. Organic produce has a 9 followed by ?a four digit number. Now that organic food/produce market has become more profitable, you have more to look out for but you don?t have to ditch organic produce, just buy locally.
The Problem with Buying Organic
1.??? With big chain stores? you have no idea what really goes on behind the scenes
2.??? Signs and stickers can be easily manipulated to increase profit
3.??? You have no idea how long it took the food to get to the store
4.??? Restaurants know they can charge more? and people will pay more if they think the food
they are eating contains ?organic ? ingredients

Why Buying Local and (Organic) Is Better
1. You can go to the local farm and see where you food is grown and in some cases you can
even ?buy directly from the farm or farmers market.
2. Produce is actually ?fresh? because? it was recently picked and still has a majority of its nutrients
3. Produce is seasonal so you have greater variety to choose from
4. Restaurants that buy local, have menus that constantly change because they are buy
ingredients that are in season.
In addition to knowing where you food comes from, buying local supports your local farms but it also supports your long term health. It can be tricky buying organic produce now that big business has taken over but you still have options.? You can start your own garden, join a community garden, and support your local farmers and restaurants that provide food with seasonal ingredients.
