Fall of Maldives president not a 'coup': panel

A Commonwealth-backed investigation in the Maldives on Thursday dismissed claims that a coup forced Mohamed Nasheed from the presidency in February and declared it was a legitimate transfer of power.

The panel's report concluded that Nasheed, who alleged he was ousted in a coup, had resigned voluntarily -- a judgment promptly rejected by his party which staged another street protest and clashed with police.

The Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI), consisting of four nationals named by political parties and a Singaporean judge nominated by the Commonwealth, found the change of president was "legal and constitutional".

"The resignation of President Nasheed was voluntary and of his own free will," it said in a 62-page report which was also signed by a Canadian and New Zealander who functioned as observers for the UN and the Commonwealth.

Nasheed's departure "was not caused by any illegal coercion or intimidation," the report said.

Nasheed has previously told his supporters that it would be legitimate to challenge the current government through "street action" if the report rejected his claims that he was overthrown in a military and police coup.

Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activists took to the streets Thursday night in a repeat of protests that have gripped the capital Male for the past six months.

Police Superintendent Abdulla Nawaz said they arrested at least 23 activists. "They have assaulted one of our officers and damaged the windows of a police vehicle," Nawaz said when contacted by telephone.

MDP activists said about 50 of their supporters had been arrested within a two-hour period and accused police of clamping down on their nightly street demonstration.

"We will keep up our campaign to press for early elections," MDP spokesman Hamid Abdul Ghafoor told AFP by telephone. He rejected the CoNI report as a "total outrage".

However, both the Commonwealth and the United States welcomed the report.

"We urge all parties to respect those findings, to exercise restraint, obey the rule of law, and continue to express themselves in a peaceful and non-violent manner," the US state department said in a statement.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma said that "the task ahead for all Maldivians must be to strengthen democracy".

"An atmosphere of peace and public order is essential for that to happen," he said.

Nasheed's nominee on the CoNI panel resigned late on Wednesday saying that it had ignored vital evidence, including photographs and videos.

The Maldives -- a string of islands set in the Indian Ocean -- relies on luxury resorts that attract wealthy tourists from around the world to its palm-fringed beaches, pristine seas and renowned diving.

This year's upheavals have not directly affected the resorts but have damaged the nation's image as a tropical paradise.

The CoNI report also noted acts of "police brutality" over the three days in February when Nasheed left office, and it called for further inquiries.

President Mohamed Waheed, who took over from Nasheed and was formerly his deputy, had earlier announced he would back its verdict.

One of his ministers, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, said Thursday that the government respected the panel's work and added that police would ensure that no civil unrest erupted at any demonstration by opposition activists.

Shareef said several unnamed countries had cut off aid to the Maldives and shunned high-level contacts over Nasheed's coup claims.

"The CoNI process is the catalyst for further engagement with the international community," Shareef, who is visiting Sri Lanka, told reporters.

President Waheed has rejected international calls for early elections, saying it was not practical to hold a vote before July 2013 in the Islamic state of 330,000 Sunni Muslims.

Marketing a Private Rental Property: The Essentials

The property market, although generally reasonably stable, can have its ups and downs. But with the right tips and marketing tools at your disposal, you need not worry about instability with your private rental property. The right type of marketing and exposure can ensure that your property has permanent, paying tenants, and that any tenant-free periods are as short as possible.

The first thing to keep in mind when marketing your private rental property is that no two properties are the same. You should make sure that you emphasize all the aspects of your property that make it unique to make t more appealing to prospective tenant. It is important that your property description and photos present your property in the best light.

It is important that you spend time on the marketing and maintenance of your private rental property to minimize vacancy periods. However, should a situation arise where you need to look for short-term tenants, it is important to be flexible and commit to finding the best tenants for the shorter time period. A private rental property is a big investment and so it is well worth making sure that your property is in good hands.

If you want to make your property available as a private rental, there are a lot of things that you need to consider in order to make it a success. Just one of these things is whether or not your property is furnished. If you intend to make your property available for holiday rentals or short-term stays, your property should be furnished. But if you intend to make the property available for longer-term contracts, it is advisable that you leave the property unfurnished because tenants will most likely prefer to use their own furniture.

If you want to be a good landlord and find success as the owner of a private rental property, there are a lot of things you need to consider. One of the most important skills you can have is that skill of communicating with your tenants. This is an important factor in getting tenants who are willing to stay for the long-term, will not damage your property and who are able to pay regular rent.

Tips On How You Could Maximize Your Credit Cards | Creative ...

Used properly, credit cards can help you efficiently manage your finances, and obtain useful benefits. There is nothing worse than returning from a well deserved vacation to a large credit card bill awaiting payment. If you want to reap the benefits of proper credit card use, this article will help you learn the basics.

It?s not necessarily in your best interest to sign up for a card that offers interest-free payments for a limited period of time. The terms may seem very appealing at first, however, in the long run, it could be a big mistake and could cost you a pile of money in interest and fees associated with the card.

TIP! Never leave a space blank on your credit card receipt when you make a purchase. Always fill up the signature line on your credit card tip receipt, so you don?t get charged extra.

If you are going to leave the country, let your credit card issuers know. Many companies freeze international transactions if they are not expected. If you report your travel schedule in advance, your trip can go a lot smoother when it comes to using your card.

Keep in mind that whenever you use a credit card you are borrowing cash. It?s easy to not be mindful of this and overspend on large purchases. Your debt will eventually have to be paid off. When you view credit cards as borrowed money, you might be more frugal with your spending.

TIP! Dedicate yourself to start trimming and paying off the higher interest balances you have on your cards. This is only going to help your financing health for the future if you do so.

When you buy with a credit card on the Internet, keep copies of your receipt. Keep receipts until you can verify the store that sold you the item charged you the same amount that you are charged on your credit card. File a dispute with your card company if there is any discrepancy. This method ensures that you are always charged the correct amount on all of your purchases.

Always memorize any pin numbers and passwords for your bank or credit cards and never write them down. You need to remember your password without writing it down so that other people can?t access it. Writing your pin number down increases the chance that someone else uses it.

Even cards that do not offer rewards, perks and points applicable to vacations can still be a benefit to your life. As long as you use your credit cards responsibly you will have no problems. If you spend recklessly on your credit cards, however, you could find yourself stressed out due to huge credit card bills. Use what you have went over here to learn how to properly use a card and get all its benefits

Aquarium Accessories to Maintain Healthy Fish - Online Pet ...

Fishes are very popular as pets because they?re often allowed in residences that don?t permit dogs or cats. Also, by using a few simple tips in your care routine, you can help your fish enjoy good health throughout their lifetime.

Water Temperature and Treatment Concerns

Unlike humans, fish are not able to regulate their body temperature. With that in mind, it?s important to purchase aquarium accessories such as thermometers. Usually, these devices are attached to the side of the tank and clearly display the water temperature. Also, choose a type of fish that can thrive in the same temperature ranges. Once you understand the optimal water temperature for your fish, work hard to keep the temperature consistent, because fluctuations can cause stress.

Also, while you?re shopping for discount pet supplies you?ll probably notice several products to improve an aquarium?s water conditions. Although these mixtures can be very helpful if a problem exists, be careful not to use them unless they?re truly necessary. Products that are added to the water for cleaning purposes, for example, are usually just temporary fixes for things that can be more easily remedied by regular water changes. Changing the water is a simple way to reduce contamination and waste build-up in the aquarium. In fact, some experts say you should try to change from 50 to 100 percent of the aquarium?s water each month. There are several helpful products available that make it easier to drain water and add fresh contents to the tank, too.

Take Care of Issues Right Away

Many varieties of fish are quite delicate. Always watch your fish carefully to understand their usual behaviours. This type of proactive attitude can help you react appropriately if something seems amiss. Fortunately, products such as API Melafix Anti-Bacterial Remedy quickly help fish that are struggling with a bacterial infection. Sometimes, these problems stem from open wounds. However, this product can be found in our online pet store, and can be simply added to the aquarium water without causing discoloration or changing the pH. Also, this treatment stimulates the regrowth of any damaged tissue, so that your fish can resume swimming comfortably as soon as possible.

You may be able to get the best price for your pet supplies online. Australia residents can purchase from shops like ours who specialise in everything you might need for pets with fins or fur.

Follow the suggestions above and look forward to enjoying years of satisfaction with your fish.

Mayo Clinic makes 'exciting' discovery in brain cancer research ...

Mayo Clinic and University of California-San Francisco researchers believe they have found a typo in the human genetic code that causes one type of brain tumors.

The researchers found what they believe triggers gliomas using ?genome-wide association studies,? Mayo pathologist Dr. Robert Jenkins said in an interview.

Such ?GWAS? studies in the past decade have identified regions of the human genome that likely play a role in particular diseases like diabetes, heart disease or gliomas.

The ultimate goal of GWAS is to find the genetic alteration that actually causes the disease.
But,??they have not been very successful,? Jenkins said.

?What?s really exciting about our study is we?ve been able to do that,? he said.

Seven possible genetic variations were reviewed after previous research showed part of human chromosome-number-8 might be associated with brain tumors.

Researchers found a single alteration in a protein base-pair of the human genetic code (DNA), which confers a relative risk for gliomas, Mayo announced.

Myanmar president promotes reformers in cabinet shake-up

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar President Thein Sein announced a long-awaited reshuffle of his cabinet on Monday that sees his top reformers moved into key ministerial posts and reassignments for remnants of the former military junta.

Ministers of Industry Minister Soe Thein, Minister of National Planning and Economic Development Tin Naing Thein and Rail Transportation Minister Aung Min - Thein Sein's closest allies - were given posts in the Office of the President, moves seen as efforts to bolster the fast-moving reforms in the post-military era.

The reshuffle of nine ministers, announced on state television, has been anticipated for months and is seen as a strong message of intent by Thein Sein, the former military heavyweight who has surprised the world by freeing more than 650 political prisoners, scrapping media censorship and introducing broad economic liberalization.

Two ministers believed to be close to retired junta strongman Than Shwe were assigned to less prominent ministries.

Aung Min's shift into the president's office frees him up to pursue complex political negotiations with at least 10 ethnic minority rebel groups with which the government has agreed ceasefires after decades of conflict during five decades of military rule.

As Industry Minister and chairman of the Myanmar Investment Commission, Soe Thein, was seen as a integral part of efforts to set up special economic zones and attract foreign businesses to an impoverished and strategically-located country rich in oil, gas, timber and precious stones.

He will be joined by Finance Minister Hla Tun in Thein Sein's inner circle. The replacements for those who were promoted were not announced on Monday.

'ACTIVE, VIBRANT' CABINET

A member of the president's advisory board, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media, told Reuters the reshuffle was intended to make the government "more active and vibrant".

"He's just sending the right men to the right places," he added.

A further 15 deputy ministerial posts were announced, which will see four more women in the top tiers of government and promotions for three of the president's closest advisors.

Labour Minister Aung Kyi, a U.S.-educated former general who served as the junta's representatives in talks with Aung San Suu Kyi during her stints of house arrest, will also head the Information Ministry overseeing media, which is now enjoying unprecedented freedom after decades of tight control.

He replaces Kyaw Hsan, who held the post for a decade and is believed to an ally of dictator Than Shwe, who relinquished power in March 2011 when Thein Sein's quasi-civilian government took office. Kyaw Hsan will become minister of cooperatives.

Tint Hsan, a businessmen who also was close to the junta leader, was relieved of one of his two posts. He will now handle only the sports portfolio and will be replaced as minister of Hotels and Tourism, sectors the government has targeted for expansion.

Next generation of smartphones will feature hardware as powerful ...

Next generation of smartphones will feature hardware as powerful as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

It?s been almost seven years since the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were released, and computer technology has changed a lot over that time. In fact, computer technology has left consoles so far in the dust that today?s console games look embarrassing compared to the graphics seen on even the most basic gaming PCs.

But that?s not the worst of it ? according to a mobile executive, the next generation of smartphones will equal the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in terms of graphical performance. That?s right: the games you play on your phone could soon look as good ? if not better ? than those you play on your console.

This development isn?t as surprising as you may think. Computer hardware gets faster, smaller, and more powerful every year, and it was only a matter of time before smartphone technology surpassed that of many computers. Many of today?s smartphones are more powerful than computers built within the last 5 to 10 years, and they leave older consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation 2 far in the dust.

Already, we?re starting to see game developers pour millions of dollars into the world of mobile gaming, and many of these developers are being rewarded with fantastic profit margins. Gaming giant EA recently acquired several mobile companies for millions of dollars, and the casual mobile gaming market is a lucrative multi-billion dollar industry.

In an interview with ComputerAndVideoGames.com, Activision?s vice president of mobile development ? Greg Canessa ? explained that the company has big plans for mobile gaming in the future. Although Activision has a limited mobile presence right now, the company has always focused on quality over quantity (recent Call of Duty titles notwithstanding). Canessa explained that the company is ?taking an organic approach, building things from the ground-up,? and that they want to bring a more thoughtful approach to the world of mobile gaming.

When games like Angry Birds create billions of dollars of revenue, we look forward to seeing what a real game developer might bring to the mobile gaming space. If Activision and Blizzard decide to jump into the world of mobile operating systems, the results could be stunning.

Think of touch-screen MMOs that run on your mobile phone throughout the day. Or, think of how Call of Duty could work on some of today?s newest phones. While games like this might make hardcore PC gamers frown, they have the potential to open up a new generation of casual gaming for millions of people around the world.

Is an Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4 on the horizon?

Of course, with smartphone technology surpassing the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 soon, this issue begs the question ? when will the next generation of consoles be released? Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have held up remarkably well over their lifespans, but over the last year their limited graphical capacity has started to become a factor. PC game sales have risen while console sales have slumped, all of which points to a new generation of consoles being released soon.

xbox720 1 Next generation of smartphones will feature hardware as powerful as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

The ?Xbox 720? and PlayStation 4 are both rumored to be in the early stages of development, although very few details are known as of yet. We might be a year or two away from the next generation of consoles, and even in that limited timeframe, smartphone technology may be able to catch up.

Conclusion

What do you think? Can you see yourself playing the full version of Madden 2013 on your smartphone? Are you craving to play Halo Reach or Call of Duty on a Galaxy S IV? Obviously, at the Speed Up My PC Free blog, we?re all about pushing hardware to its full potential, and we can?t wait to see what the next generation of smartphone games has in store for us!

Non-smokers benefit most from smoking ban

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Many European countries have passed anti-smoking legislation which bans smoking from restaurants, bars and public buildings. After implementation of such a smoking ban on 1 January 2008 in the metropolitan area of Bremen in northwest Germany (800,000 inhabitants) a 16% decline in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) was observed. STEMI is the severest form of myocardial infarction.

For the study, 3,545 STEMIs in the Bremen-STEMI-Registry which occurred between 2006 and 2010 were analyzed.? Dr Schmucker said: "There were more non-smokers than smokers, which explains why the non-smokers group had more STEMIs registered."

For the total population in 2006 and 2007, before the smoking ban was passed, averages of 65 STEMIs were registered per month. In 2008 to 2010, after the smoking ban was passed, the number fell by 16% to an average of 55 STEMIs per month. "This confirms that the smoking ban had a positive impact on the population as a whole by decreasing the number of STEMIs," said Dr Schmucker.

A nearly constant rate of STEMIs was observed in active smokers during 2006-2010. In 2006-2007 active smokers had an average of 25 STEMIs per month. In 2008-2010, they had an average of 26 STEMIs per month, a 4% increase. Dr Schmucker said: "Active smokers are inhaling such high doses of tobacco smoke that being exposed to less passive smoke in public venues is not going to change the risk for that particular group."

In non-smokers there was a 26% decrease in STEMIs, from an average of 39 STEMIs per month in 2006-2007 to an average of 29 STEMIs per month in 2008-2010. The steepest decline in the non-smoking group was detected in young non-smokers; in this group the average number of STEMIs per month was 31% lower in 2008-2010 compared to 2006-2007.

"The reduction in the occurrence of this severest and deadliest form of myocardial infarction in the metropolitan area of Bremen can be partially attributed to the commencement of anti-smoking legislation," said Dr Schmucker. "Non-smokers and especially non-smokers under the age of 65 benefited most from the implementation of the law, indicating the harmful effects of passive smoking. This suggests that expanding anti-smoking legislation could reduce the occurrence of STEMIs even further in the future."

(AP) ? Syrian rebels freed one of 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims they have been holding for three months on Saturday, in a move aiming to ease cross-border tensions after a wave of abductions of Syrian citizens in Lebanon.

Hussein Ali Omar, 60, appeared healthy in an interview aired on Qatar's Al-Jazeera TV as he crossed into Turkey after his release, urging the Lebanese and Arabs to support the Syrian people in the midst of their country's escalating civil war.

The release came a week after Lebanese tribesmen kidnapped two Turks and more than 20 Syrians to force the rebels to release Lebanese citizen Hassane al-Mikdad, who the rebels captured near the Syrian capital of Damascus and accused of being a member of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group. The al-Mikdad clan, which later released most of the Syrians it was holding except for four, is a powerful Shiite Muslim family in Lebanon.

The Shiite pilgrims were abducted May 22 after crossing into Syria from Turkey on their way to Lebanon. A previously unheard of group calling itself "Syrian Rebels in Aleppo" claimed responsibility.

The group demanded that the Hezbollah leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, apologize for his comments in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Nasrallah, an ally of Assad's regime, has said the abduction would not change his group's stance.

Mohammed Nour, a rebel spokesman in the Syrian northern town of Azaz, said in a statement read on TV that the release was in response to a request by Lebanon's Association of Muslim Scholars and an adviser to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Nour did not say what they will do with the remaining 10 pilgrims but repeated his call for Hezbollah to "specify their stance regarding the Syrian people and revolution."

Syria's 18-month crisis has spilled over into neighboring Lebanon, where pro- and anti-Syrian group have clashed since Monday in the northern city of Tripoli. The latest violence in Tripoli killed at least 17 and wounded more than a 100 wounded.

In Syria, activists reported clashes between rebels and government troops and well as shelling in different areas including the northern province of Aleppo, the district of Idlib, the eastern region of Deir el-Zour and Daraa in the south. The activists also reported violence in some suburbs of the capital, Damascus, including Daraya which government troops entered on Thursday.

State-run news agency SANA reported heavy clashes in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, saying that "many terrorists" were killed or wounded.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said clashes in the eastern town of al-Bukamal, which borders Iraq, were concentrated near an air defense base. Al-Bukamal is in the oil-rich province of Deir el-Zour.

The Observatory said 109 people were killed in Daraya alone over the past four days as a result of clashes and violence.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said army helicopter gunships attacked the town of Qusair in the central province of Homs.

Activists say that more than 20,000 people have been killed since the country's crisis began in March last year.

Earlier Saturday, the head of a team of United Nations observers tasked to monitor a cease-fire in Syria that failed left Damascus. Lt. Gen. Babacar Gaye gave no statement before leaving for Lebanon.

The mission ended last Sunday but Gaye stayed for meetings. The U.N. Security Council has agreed to back a small new liaison office to support future peace efforts.

The observers' deployment in April was one of the only concrete achievements in Special Envoy Kofi Annan's attempts to halt the country's escalating civil war. They had intended to supervise a truce that never took hold.

Annan abandoned the job earlier this month and was replaced by veteran Algerian diplomat and former U.N. envoy to Afghanistan and Iraq Lakhdar Brahimi.

Brahimi hinted Friday at the immense challenges he faces trying to negotiate an end to the war, saying the mission left him "flattered, humbled and scared."

Republicans not alone in hot, sticky Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republicans have a perfectly logical reason to book their national convention in Florida, a swing state that Mitt Romney must win if he is to defeat President Barack Obama.

But who else in their right minds would consider holding such a large-scale event just when the state is at its hottest, stickiest and most vulnerable to hurricanes?

The answer? Lots of people.

Why? Because when the uncomfortable heat and humidity rise, hotel and catering prices drop. Meanwhile, popular venues that are impossible to snag in high season are quite often available.

That is appealing to many. Everyone from Star Wars fans and purveyors of adult entertainment, to beauty specialists, dancers, journalists, real estate agents and Asian business groups are planning to gather in the Sunshine State in the coming weeks.

Take September, one of the most active months for hurricanes, when nearly 30 events are scheduled at convention centers in Tampa, Miami, and Orlando.

"The calendar has been full the last couple of summers I've been here," said George Aiello, marketing manager for the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Here are some of the activities scheduled for those intrepid souls who plan to venture south in these swampiest of months.

___

AUGUST

? Orlando: Star Wars convention. Expected draw: 35,000 people.

? Tampa: Republican National Convention. Expected draw: 40,000-50,000 (including journalists and an estimated 10,000 protesters).

? Miami Beach: Home Design and Remodeling Show. Expected draw: 75,000 people.

SEPTEMBER

? Miami Beach: The Asia America Trade Show. Expected draw: more than 16,000 people.

? Miami Beach: Americas Food and Beverage Show. Expected draw: 10,000 people.

? Miami Beach: Sex on the Beach Expo. Expected draw: more than 20,000 people.

? Fort Lauderdale: Annual conference of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Radio Television Digital News Association. Expected draw: 1,500.

? Orlando: Surf Expo. Expected draw: 10,000 people.

? Orlando: Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show. Expected draw: more than 11,000 people.

? Tampa: AFCEA-Biometrics Consortium Conference. Expected draw: 1,800 people.

? Tampa: National Association of Health Care Quality 37th Annual Educational Conference. Expected draw: 600 people.

_______

Armario reported from Miami. Attendance estimates for the convention were provided by organizers, protest groups and police officials. Estimates for other events were provided by the organizers.

Brewing Interest in Obama's Home Brew Comes to a Head - Daily Kos

Today, Press Secretary Jay Carney fended off questions about the White House beer, promising to get back to the Press Corp after further research:

Press Secretary Jay Carney took questions on this today, in this exchange:
Q: And finally, I know this is ? I think you were asked about this earlier in the week, but there?s been a sort of push from the online Homebrewers Association for the White House to release its beer recipe. I believe there are three, at least, White House beers brewed here. Does the White House have any plans to release its beer recipes?
MR. CARNEY: Not that I?m aware of. ? I think the president and first lady were asked about this a little bit in an interview last week, which I believe is published or broadcast, about how the White House beer came about. But I don?t ? I?m not aware of any plans at this time to ? divulge the secret recipe.
Q: I believe there have been Freedom of Information ? (inaudible) ? filed on this issue, so ?
MR. CARNEY: I?ll have to take the question ? (scattered laughter) ? examine it, taste it. (Laughter.)
Photobucket

Eun Kim describes the FOIA filing:

Another beer lover went further and demanded the White House beer recipes through the Freedom of Information Act, or a FOIA request.
?You should know that I am requesting this as a home brewer and for the education of other home brewers not for commercial use,? he writes.

?A personal notebook or an email about ingredients probably doesn't fall under the definition of ?documents? in FOIA, but a brewing manual or recipie [sic] book or something like that which is used to train others WOULD be a responsive document. If I'm lucky, that's what I'll get??

But the filer also admitted he was hoping a little flattery would help his pursuit. He boldly ends his letter with the following request:
?Also, if you could send me a copy autographed by the President, you?d be the coolest FOIA officer in the whole federal government,

So far the President's secret recipe seems safe. ?The petition on the White House has only 3,609 signatures, well short of the 21,391 needed to qualify for an official White House response. And, White House documents are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. ?

At the Iowa State Fair, crowds broke out into chants of "four more beers," when the President started serving beers from a vender.

So, now I'm wondering if this may be part of ?a secret OFA strategy for an "October Surprise," in the form of a national "Baracktober Beer Fest."

Just to give you a taste of things to come, don't be surprised if you find me leading the cheering crowds in chants, of ?"four more years, with four more beers!" -- our new campaign slogan. ?This would certainly give the October Surprise election tradition a heady new verve.

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:

Release the recipe for the Honey Ale home brewed at the White House.

Following in the footsteps of great men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, Barack Obama has reportedly been enjoying the rewards of home brewed beer. Recent reports from news outlets like the Washington Post (August 15th, 2012) have stated that Obama has been drinking a White House home brew Honey Ale while on the campaign trail.

In keeping with the brewing traditions of the founding fathers, homebrewers across America call on the Obama Administration to release the recipe for the White House home brew so that it may be enjoyed by all.

4:19 PM PT: Our resident political genius, gchaucer2 proposes a brilliant idea -- President Obama offers to release his beer recipes, if Mr. Romney will release his taxes back to 1999. ?

Breaking News

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/...

What we know about the beer, which has been featured as a campaign prop during the president's Iowa travels, is that it goes by the name White House Honey Ale. The brewski's honey comes from Michelle Obama's garden beehive on the south lawn and it's bottled in a small brewery in the White House. While this is the first time it's made its way on the campaign trail, the Honey Ale started surfacing at White House events in 2011 including the Obamas' Super Bowl party. But that's about all we know.
So, the quest to learn "what is the President brewing, and when does it brew it? continues.

NHL collective bargaining session brief in Toronto

TORONTO (AP) ? Another NHL lockout is beginning look inevitable.

Unable to move beyond the philosophical stage of talks, the owners and players have watched another week slip by without progress. They sat down together for a quick session Thursday morning before reporting the same significant gap that has existed all along.

The main issue that divides them is far from complex.

"We believe we're paying out more than we should be," Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "It's as simple as that."

Of course, the NHL Players' Association doesn't quite see it that way.

Executive director Donald Fehr has acknowledged there's room for some flexibility in that area ? last week's proposal included three years with a slightly lower share in revenues for the players ? but he hasn't come to the table in a conciliatory mood after taking over a union that capitulated during the last round of negotiations.

"Everybody understands that employers would always like to pay less," Fehr said. "That's not a surprise to anybody ? it's disappointing sometimes ? but it's not a surprise."

He went on to add that the services his constituents provide are irreplaceable.

"From the players' standpoint, they want a fair agreement, they want one that is equitable, they want one that recognizes their contribution," Fehr said.

With both sides so entrenched, real negotiations have yet to begin even though the Sept. 15 deadline for a lockout is fast approaching.

The parties attempted to make some progress Wednesday by clearing the meeting room of everyone but the key figures: Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly along with Fehr and his brother Steve Fehr, the union's No. 2 man. They soon discovered there was little common ground.

Those same four men will reopen talks next Tuesday in New York during what promises to be a key negotiation session. The sides have tentatively blocked off the rest of the week for meetings as well, but they must first determine if there's anything worth talking about.

That's far from guaranteed.

A league that lost the entire 2004-05 season to a lockout is in real danger of having the start of another one disrupted for the same reason. The current CBA has seen the NHL grow from a $2.1 billion industry to one that pulls in $3.3 billion annually ? a fact that isn't lost on either side.

"We recovered well last time because we have the world's greatest fans," Bettman said.

The essential difference between the offers put forward so far is perhaps best articulated in terms of their impact on the salary cap. Under the NHL's initial proposal, it would fall to $50.8 million for next season. The NHLPA's would see it set near $69 million.

The league also is believed to have verbally raised the possibility of seeing the players' share in revenue drop incrementally rather than all at once. Theoretically, it could be done at a rate that is matched by an expected increase in revenues ? essentially keeping salaries constant over the duration of the agreement while owners take in more profit.

So far, the union hasn't shown much interest in negotiating off of that kind of model.

While it's natural to assume the parties might be more willing to make concessions as Sept. 15 nears, Fehr pointed out that they already know what's at stake.

"If there's going to be a lockout ? and that's something that the owners will choose or not choose ? then you would have missed games, you would have lost revenue, you would have lost paychecks," he said. "But that doesn't mean that the parties don't understand going into it that that would be the case."

With the possibility of a lockout becoming more real, the posturing is starting to begin. Bettman lamented Thursday that the union wasn't ready to open talks a year ago ? the commissioner did say throughout the season there was more than enough time to make a deal ? while Fehr continues to point out that Sept. 15 is only a deadline because the NHL has made it one.

The bottom line is that they need to make an agreement and there isn't one in sight.

Seven years ago, the sides battled one another over the philosophical view of whether the sport needed a salary cap. With that out of the way, this fight is all about money, although Bettman declined to go into detail when asked why the owners were seeking such significant givebacks.

"I'm not going to get into a public debate on that," he said. "Obviously, if we didn't think that there were issues that needed to be addressed we wouldn't be in this type of negotiation."

Modern Parent, Relish the Experience of Motherhood

By Shonna McGrail?Ryan

Becoming a parent is and always will be a mixture of excitement, anticipation, hard work, and yes, a bit of nervousness. ?In modern times, some of the needs of new parents can be met through online resources such as parenting blogs and shopping from home. However, if you just had a new addition to your family or have one on the way, you probably have already discovered that the sheer number of sites out there can be overwhelming. For the modern parent looking for a little help, local woman and mother Denell Pepin has an innovative new blog site called MoPa.

MoPa (short for Modern Parent) is a trendy blog that is just getting its start but already has a lot to offer when it comes to highlighting everything from baby gadgets to back to school fashion. The website and social media components of MoPa are dedicated to today?s modern parent lifestyle and celebrating parenthood as well as highlighting the individuality of mothers everywhere. ?In addition to frequent posts highlighting cool new products, MoPaShow.com also posts a?monthly ?Modern Mom Series? which shares interviews and photos of unique moms who have blended their lifestyle and motherhood into a successful package.

Denell and her two boys.

I sat down with MoPa creator Denell Pepin the other day to find out more about her blog and about the idea of a ?modern parent.? ?I do not have any children myself, but having friends and family who have recently had babies I have learned that it can be both exciting and overwhelming. ?Denell explained to me that too often new mothers find that their own sense of individuality comes under strain within the first few demanding years of raising a child. This is a concept that Denell is no stranger to, having been both a trend forecaster in NYC for Cotton Incorporated and now living the role of mother to two boys. ?Thus, Denell created MoPa as a landing page for moms to both shop at and get daily inspiration from.

Denell was very excited to talk with me about MoPa?s first upcoming event on September 23rd. ?This event is intended to take the idea of MoPa offline and into real time by providing a night out where attendees can interact with both local and national sellers while enjoying mocktails, light refreshments, music and workshops. According to Denell, participants should expect the event to be much like a beautiful baby shower that combines shopping and educational opportunities together to create a ?chic and contemporary modern day expo? where new and expecting parents can mingle and chat with others from the area.

There will be five program rich workshops at the September 23rd Modern Parent event including how to best approach a baby registry and some health inspirations from the ladies at Boutique Fitness. The MoPa event will be attended by national brand representatives such as Bumble Ride, and there will also be local participants such as the New Bedford-based, internationally acclaimed jewelry artist Isabelle Grace. ?Since MoPa is all about the lifestyle of the modern parent, all sales aren?t just directed towards baby gear; there will also be exhibitors for beauty products, parenting services, and much more. ?Additionally, some lucky mothers will be eligible to win incredible giveaways for attending.

For new and expecting parents, this is really a great opportunity, and Denell expressed her hope that in the future this will be ?an event that women look forward to every year.? ?She explained to me that MoPa online and offline is geared towards giving women a chance to relish the experience of motherhood and enjoy the lifestyle of being a modern mom; ?We?re all about discovering trends in baby gear & gadgets, accessories, furniture, clothing, skin care, parenting services, and more.? ?It is her intention that this first MoPa event will be a night of celebrating parenthood for all in attendance. ?Additionally, Denell seemed thrilled to be bringing so many quality vendors to Greater New Bedford and hopes that this event will open the door for MoPa to be involved with many other community events in the future.

The Modern Parent event will take place at the Hawthorne Country Club in North Dartmouth. ?Festivities begin at 3 PM on Sunday September 23rd and end at 7 PM. ?For tickets, go to www.mopashow.com. ?Tickets are $15 for one person, or $20 for two people. All?participants will receive a Swag Bag?and the first 50 people to sign up will receive a VIP Swag Bag with great products. ?For current and soon-to-be parents, this is a do not miss evening!

DEAR FACEBOOK: Stop Fooling Around, Jump ... - Business Insider

Facebook search

Facebook's demolished stock caught a minor lift this afternoon when Josh Constine of TechCrunch reported that the company is getting ready to launch a Facebook-specific type of search ad.

This news reminded investors of what they were thinking when they plunged lock, stock, and barrel into Facebook's IPO three months ago--which is that the company has a massive global platform on which it should be able to layer on lucrative new products.

Alas, it quickly became clear that the search ads Facebook will be rolling out are designed merely to help increase traffic within Facebook.

So, once again, Facebook investors lost hope.

But investors shouldn't forget about this one completely.

Facebook does, in fact, have a huge opportunity in search.

And with the company's stock price now half of what it was only three months ago, even the adamantly idealistic Mark Zuckerberg might be tempted to rake in some easy money from search--especially when raking in this money won't in any way hurt the Facebook user experience.

In fact, improving search might help the Facebook user experience.

Why?

Because Facebook users, just like other Internet and mobile users, often search for things. And the things they're searching for aren't always on Facebook.

Sometimes, for example, Facebook users search for products they want to buy.

So instead of (or in addition to) trying to dream up ever-more-clever ways to place "social ads" in front of users when they're not interested in seeing ads or buying anything, maybe it's time for Facebook to take advantage of the fact that its users actually sometimes do want to buy things.

That window drives $40 billion in revenue.

Because, after all, that's the magic that allows Google to generate more than $40 billion in annual revenue--about 10-times what Facebook makes from its annoying little display ads.

Google doesn't hang its advertisements on the walls at a party, which is effectively what Facebook does.

Google doesn't hang its advertisements anywhere, in fact, until its users tell it what they want to buy.

Then Google gives its users ads that might help them buy what they're looking for.

That's why Google is the most successful ad-driven company in history: Because its ads are mind-bogglingly targeted and relevant, and they're shown to users only when users want to see them. Facebook users, meanwhile, want to do everything but look at ads--Facebook users want to keep socializing with their friends. (SEE: "Like Hell Facebook Will Kill Google")

So, why doesn't Facebook just start doing the same thing Google is doing?

Yahoo, which is imploding, still generates nearly $2 billion a year from search revenue. And it's almost all profit.

AOL, which is also imploding, also generates nearly $500 million a year from search revenue. And it's almost all profit.

Microsoft, which is in the software business, generates about $2 billion a year from search revenue. (Unlike the other search players, Microsoft is hemorrhaging money, but Facebook wouldn't have to do that.)

Why does Facebook have such a huge opportunity in search?

Because 500 million people a month live on Facebook.

They don't visit Facebook.

They live there.

They start at Facebook, communicate through Facebook, and quickly return to Facebook every time they stray away.

So maybe it's time Facebook helped them to start searching at Facebook--and not just for things that are on Facebook. Facebook should help its users start searching for everything.

(If Facebook is really clever about this, and can figure out ways to use the immense amount of data it already has about its users to make its search tools even more useful, it could actually build a better search engine.)

Make no mistake: One of the reasons Google is so obsessed with Facebook (see Google +, etc.) is because Google knows that Facebook could one day threaten its core revenue engine. If Facebook focused on search, it could make it so people had no reason to go to Google to search for anything--because they're already on Facebook. And Google obviously knows that.

How much revenue could Facebook generate from search?

Well, according to Andrew Lipsman at Comscore, Facebook is already doing 1.6 billion web-based searches a month.

That's 3-times as many as AOL.?

It's one-fifth as many as Yahoo (which no effort whatsoever).

Yes, it's only 1/100th as many as Google, but, again, Facebook is generating those queries with no effort whatsoever.

So let's assume that Facebook could go do a search deal with Google that paid it as much as AOL gets paid per search. This would allow it to instantly generate ~$1 billion of annual search revenue tomorrow.

And then let's say that Facebook actually made it a priority to boost search as a Facebook service and revenue stream and increase its number of search queries.

Given the amount of time people spend on Facebook, as opposed to the amount they spend on Yahoo, I hope it's not disrespectful to Yahoo to suggest that Facebook could--in relatively short order--amass as many search queries as Yahoo.

And if Facebook did its outsourced search monetization deal with Google instead of with Microsoft, Facebook could probably get much better monetization per search than Yahoo does.

(This is important: Facebook doesn't have to go build a search engine. It just has to do a bigger deal with one.)

So it doesn't seem unreasonable to suggest that, with Yahoo's 10 billion queries a month, Facebook might be able to generate $3 billion of annual search revenue.

This $3 billion of annual search revenue, importantly, would be almost 100% profit.

Why?

Because Facebook wouldn't be incurring any costs to build its search engine--it would simply be working with Google.

Google would charge advertisers, say, $1 per click, and Facebook would get $0.90 of that.

That's exactly how Google works with AOL.

It's exactly how Microsoft works with Yahoo.

In other words, there's no reason for Facebook to have to completely reorient itself as a company to cash in on search. It just has to pick up the money sitting in the corner.

$3 billion of pure-profit search revenue would quickly double Facebook's annual operating profit.

The launch of an exciting new Facebook revenue growth engine, meanwhile, would get investors so excited about Facebook again that they would suddenly be eager to pay a lot more for the stock.

So, between incremental earnings and multiple expansion, it seems reasonable to think that an aggressive move into search could eventually triple Facebook's market cap.

So, how about it Facebook?

Do you maybe want to pick up the huge pile of search money sitting in the corner?

Or are you going to stubbornly keep focusing on "social ads?"
