No. 1 Indiana gets stronger with 2 freshmen back

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? No. 1 Indiana, which has been playing short-handed all season, is getting reinforcements.

On Saturday, 6-foot-8 forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea and 7-foot center Peter Jurkin are expected to make their college debuts after completing an NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension. All the Hoosiers have to do now is figure out how to work the two freshmen into the lineup against in-state rival Butler.

"I think it's going to be sort of a game feel," Indiana associate head coach Steve McClain said. "I think coach (Tom Crean) has an idea in his mind of how he wants to do this."

He's just not saying what it is.

It's not as if the Hoosiers (9-0) need more help. They lead the nation in scoring (89.1 points) and victory margin (plus-31.7). They are fourth nationally in rebound differential (plus-13.8) and field-goal percentage (51.5). They even lead the Big Ten in defensive field-goal percentage (35.3) and defensive 3-point percentage (26.4) and have won every game by double digits.

Still, things were starting to get thin on the front line.

Derek Elston, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, had surgery Oct. 26 for a torn meniscus in his left knee and though his recovery is going well, he isn't expected back until after Christmas. Last week, sophomore forward Austin Etherington went down with a season-ending fractured left kneecap.

So getting the two freshmen back now will help at this weekend's Crossroads Classic, a double-header featuring Indiana's four best-known basketball programs ? the Hoosiers, two-time national runner-up Butler and two more NCAA tourney regulars, No. 22 Notre Dame and Purdue.

Mosquera-Perea and Jurkin were ordered to sit last month by the NCAA, which determined the two had accepted improper benefits from their AAU coach, Mark Adams. He provided them with $9,702 and $6,003 in plane tickets, meals, housing, a laptop computer, a cellphone and clothing. Mosquera-Perea was told to pay back approximately $1,590 and Jurkin $250.

The NCAA said both players were qualified to receive the benefits from AHOPE, the nonprofit organization Adams uses to help international players obtain travel documents and cover travel costs to the U.S. The problem was that Adams also was considered an Indiana booster because he donated $185 to the Varsity Club from 1986-92, and boosters cannot provide benefits to players.

Now that they are with the team, it won't be as simple as just plugging Mosquera-Perea and Jurkin into a lineup that revolves around national player of the year candidate Cody Zeller. McClain said it may take a little time to figure it all out.

"Peter is a shot-blocker with length whereas Hanner is a shot-blocker who can step out on the perimeter and guard a perimeter player," McClain said. "They both can rebound on a high level, so they bring a lot to the table."

For the Bulldogs, it's another opportunity to slay a basketball behemoth in front of a national television audience.

Butler (7-2) captivated the nation by becoming the first school in Indiana's storied history to reach back-to-back championship games in 2010 and 2011, and the Bulldogs are up to their old tricks again. The Bulldogs have won four straight, five straight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and have already beaten Marquette, North Carolina and Northwestern as rumors have spread that they may be looking to leave the Atlantic 10 and join a new conference with Marquette and other former Big East schools.

Athletic director Barry Collier declined to comment on those rumors Friday.

One thing Butler hasn't done yet: Beat a No. 1 team. In its only other meetings with the nation's top-ranked team, Butler lost at DePaul in February 1980 and at Michigan during the 1964-65 season.

This time, they'll play Indiana five miles from the Butler campus with a team that has steadily improved.

Butler's game plan revolves around two new hotshot shooters ? Rotnei Clarke, the big-shooting guard who was an All-SEC player at Arkansas, and Kellen Dunham. Plus, 7-foot senior Andrew Smith and power forward Khyle Marshall have been playing better. Smith is coming off a 24-point, 10-rebound game at Northwestern, maybe the best game of his career, and Marshall has become an imposing inside threat.

Coach Brad Stevens nearly had Zeller to go along with that group, but he choose Indiana over Butler and North Carolina.

"They're No. 1 for a reason, they're very deep. I think they've got great skill, great athleticism and a selfless superstar," Stevens said of the Hoosiers. "I think they'll be the team to beat all the way through April."

While the Indiana-Butler game is Saturday's main feature, it's not the only popular attraction in town.

Notre Dame forwards Jack Cooley and Scott Martin will lead No. 22 Notre Dame (8-1) against the young Boilermakers (4-5). These schools, just 108 miles apart, haven't met on the basketball court since the 2004 NIT and the series is tied 20-20.

Martin, once part of a Purdue recruiting class dubbed the Baby Boilers, has downplayed the significance of facing his old school.

"I had some good times and some big wins, so I definitely enjoyed myself there (at Purdue)," Martin said. "Obviously, it didn't work out, and I don't think anyone was too thrilled about the way things happened, but I don't think anyone's bitter about it."

The Boilermakers have struggled this season with three losses already to non-power conference schools ? Bucknell, Xavier and last Saturday at Eastern Michigan 47-44. Their only win against a BCS-conference school came at Clemson.

Grandfather of the barcode dies at 91

N. Joseph Woodland, who in a moment?of serendipity arrived at the idea for the now-ubiquitous barcode while sitting in the sand at Miami Beach, passed away at his home in Edgewater, N.J. on?Sunday. He was 91.?

Patented?60 years ago,?Woodland's?idea of encoding numbers as a pattern akin to Morse code would soon be used everywhere from grocery stores to manufacturing lines. As noted by the New York Times, "The code now adorns tens of millions of different items, scanned in retail establishments around the world at the rate of more than five billion a day. "

Woodland's path to the barcode was circuitous. Following a stint working on the Manhattan Project, he was approached by?Bernard Silver,?a classmate at the?Drexel Institute of Technology, to work on a new project.?Silver had an idea after overhearing a?local?supermarket executive asking the Drexel dean to help create a universal product labeling system. He recruited Woodland to pursue the idea, and?the project became Woodland's?new passion.

The initial collaboration failed to pan out, however, and?Woodland moved in 1948 to his grandparents' place in Miami Beach to ponder the problem. There he found in the sand at his feet what he couldn't find in a lab at the university.

Drawing his fingers through the sand, Woodland was struck by the similarity of such simple marks and Morse Code, which he had learned as a Boy Scout. He reconvened with Silver and by October of 1949 they had submitted a patent application for the barcode's progenitor: A bull's-eye of concentric bands that differed in width, which could be scanned at any orientation to produce a unique number.

Unfortunately, the reading apparatus was too cumbrous for stores, so the project was again abandoned and Woodland went to work for IBM. His chance came again in the early 1970s, when several colleagues took up the idea again and produced what we now know as the Universal Product Code or barcode.

So, while Woodland didn't produce the system on his own, it was his and Silver's work in 1949 that made it possible. Hence we may consider him the "grandfather" of the barcode.

Numerals in the UPC system are encoded as a series of bars, two black and two white, of varying widths. The dark and light areas can be read extremely rapidly by a laser scanner, and simple built-in error correction keeps reliability high.

It's such an efficient and extensible system that it's still in use more than?40 years after its invention, and virtually unchanged at that except for a few adjustments in scanners and international standards. Few inventors could?make such a claim, but Woodland was certainly one of them.

Angels landed Josh?Hamilton

The hot stove season always takes unexpected turns, and this afternoon it took the most unexpected turn we?ve seen in some time. ?Seemingly out of nowhere the Los Angeles Angels swooped in and signed Josh Hamilton. ?Legendary L.A. radio man Joe McDonnell had the first news that a deal with close. Within an hour it was reported by multiple sources, starting with ESPN Dallas, that the Angels and Hamilton had reached deal. ?Fox?s Jon Paul Morosi was the first to report that it was a five-year deal. The money: $125 million.

This makes it two years running that the Angels have signed the best available free agent hitter, with Albert Pujols coming into the fold. ?It also marks the second straight year that the Angels have signed away the Rangers top departing free agent, with C.J. Wilson heading to the Angels last year as well. ?The year before that Mike Napoli made a circuitous journey from Anaheim to the Rangers, helping Texas win the pennant.

This is the best rivalry in baseball now and it?s not even close. ?Heck, maybe the second best rivalry ? or rivalry to be ? involves the Angels and the Dodgers. ?Each L.A. team is lapping the field in terms of big money signings, with each fighting to become or remain the darlings of the nation?s second largest media market. It had appeared that the newly-free-spending Dodgers were regaining that title for keeps, but with Hamilton in the fold down in Orange County, the war for the hearts and minds of L.A. baseball fans is ON.

With the caveat that, yes, we said this last year too, it?s probably safe to say that the Angels are the favorites in the AL West. Their potential lineup is fantastic:

The point is, no matter what Mike Scioscia does, he has plenty of options to choose from. More importantly, so does GM Jerry Dipoto, who could now deal Trumbo or Bourjos for pitching help. R.A. Dickey, anyone?

Not that we can crown anyone just yet. ?Again, we thought the Angels won it all with the Pujols and Wilson signings last year, and that didn?t work out. ?And let?s remember, with respect to players they have in common ? Mike Napoli and C.J. Wilson ? the Rangers have done a pretty good job of out-evaluating the Angels over the past couple of years. Of course, that was before the Angels turned over their front office.

But no matter what happens, the AL West just got a lot more fun, and it already was the most fun division in baseball.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The woman who led the federal government's response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 said Wednesday she will leave her post at the end of February.

"I have decided to return to my family and academia," Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, wrote to NOAA employees.

No successor was immediately announced for Lubchenco, who has held the job since 2009. She became well-known to the public for her role in response to the BP oil spill off the coast of Louisiana in April 2010.

Her agency was accused of accepting for too long the oil company's low estimates for the amount of oil leaking. It also was criticized for a report saying that by August of that year most of the spilled oil was gone, or at least not visible. The agency said much of it had dispersed naturally, had burned or was removed.

A few weeks later, a study by independent scientists reported an invisible, 22-mile underwater plume of oil ingredients. And NOAA acknowledged the deepwater oil was not degrading as fast as they initially thought.

Still, Lubchenco was praised Wednesday by the Ocean Conservancy. "Dr. Lubchenco and NOAA were quick to respond to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil disaster and continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring that the Gulf region, including the marine ecosystem, is restored," said interim president and CEO Janis Searles Jones.

Lubchenco also oversaw in 2010 the controversial transition to a new fishery management system in New England that allots fishermen individual shares of the catch, which they pool and manage in groups.

The system aimed to give fishermen flexibility to fish when the market and conditions were good, and free them from being restricted to an ever-dwindling number of days they were allowed to fish. And it pleased environmentalists because it established hard, enforceable catch limits to better prevent overfishing.

A marine ecologist and environmental scientist by training, and a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Lubchenco is one of several prominent scientists hired by the Obama administration.

She was a professor at Oregon State University when the president appointed her in 2009. She said in her email Wednesday that "as many of you know, my home and family are on the West Coast."

Everyone knows it stinks, but no one says anything?

Maybe it looks pretty but the content sucks, or the content is great but the design is lacking, or the navigation is frustrating, or you?re missing key elements. You?re probably too busy to notice or think about it too much. You are running a business, after all. Your friends might be too nice to tell you, and strangers couldn?t care less? they?re onto the next one in seconds.

As a business owner you?re probably good at your elevator pitch. You can quickly articulate what you do, and how your products or services can help people solve a problem. Maybe you?ve gone a step further by attending workshops on how to speak clearly and confidently in front of strangers. These are all good steps toward getting new clients and making more money.

What makes your website content any different?

How come so many business websites and other marketing materials are embarrassingly inadequate? Would you ever present your elevator pitch in incomplete sentences?

Bad website content makes your web visitors turn up their noses and click away. Visitors who could have read further, could have clicked ?Contact Us? or filled out a form to learn more about how your services can help them. They would have contacted you instead of you having to cold call them, or spend all your time at networking events spewing your elevator pitch at high frequency. (I?m not suggesting you should stop networking ? connecting with people in real life is a very valuable piece of the puzzle.)

The internet is a giant networking event

The internet gives you endless, FREE opportunities to quickly lay down the reasons why your business, products or services are so great, and you don?t even have to put on a suit or leave your house. You could promote your business online all day long without wearing pants should you so desire. Your website is your elevator pitch, and if you?re not thinking of it as an important part of your networking strategy, you need to start now. It?s an extremely valuable and very affordable form of advertising that not enough people use to their full advantage.

How can people hire you if they don?t know how you can help them?

What if they have no idea what you do? Your website can help you communicate that, even if you have a crippling fear of public speaking, or claustrophobia and always take the stairs.

Lesson: no matter how great you are at what you do, if you can?t communicate it clearly and effectively online, you?re missing out on huge opportunities for business growth.

How to avoid stinking up the internet

An elevator pitch should have several key elements to be effective, and so should your website.

Elements of a basic website:

• A ?Home? page that quickly and clearly lets people know what you do and how you can help them
• An ?About? page that goes into further detail about your experience and your credentials
• A ?Services? page or something similar that describes your products or services
• Examples of your work and your clients, including the oh-so-valuable testimonials
• A strong, prominently placed call to action that persuades your website visitors to take action (such as complete a form or email or call you directly)
• Clearly and prominently placed contact information, either on a ?Contact Us? page or in the header of all pages
• These elements apply to a basic website that promotes your business online, but can be customized to fit your business? unique requirements. If you?re running an e-commerce business, for example, your website would obviously be much more complex.

Of course, it?s not just about written content

If your site is full of bad graphics, run-of-the-mill stock photos and all-around bad navigation, even the best content is lost.

How are trade/vocational schools different from regular college ...

i know they take less time and are supposed to be hands-on kind of training, but is it only hands on or is there still classroom work involved? im not a classroom kind of person at all and am definitely a visual, hands on learner. are they hard to get into? also are they really expensive?

first of all, it is not hard to get into a trade school. they cost a lot of money because you?re skipping all the general education in college. it is definitely hands on and classroom education. you have to be knowledgeable when you get out of school to work. i know some schools do have an externship for a month before you can graduate. i?m going to Everest College for dental assisting and 2 hours of my class are classroom time. we take a vocabulary test everyday and our teacher lectures out of the book and tells us real life situations he has gone through. he makes sure everyone understands everything. then we go to lunch and then go to lab. in lab is where we learn our hands on for the next 2 hours. i?ve only been in school for a month and i have learned how to do x-rays, coronal polishing, periodontal dressing, how to take vital signs? my tuition is $14,000 for 8 months with books and uniform included.

Keeping its promise to roll out new features to the aforementioned members first, Adobe has announced updates to Muse and Photoshop alongside Creative Cloud training materials and team subscriptions. Muse can not only help you publish websites without writing a line of code, but the software now offers assistance with smartphone and tablet-friendly versions of desktop sites, too. U.S. court hearing could mark end of Strauss-Kahn civil lawsuit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn and the hotel maid who accused him last year of attempting to rape her have agreed to a settlement in her civil lawsuit against him.

In a court hearing in New York on Monday, Bronx Supreme Court Justice Douglas McKeon announced the two sides had reached a deal to end the litigation, but said details of the settlement, including the amount of any damages to be paid to Nafissatou Diallo by Strauss-Kahn, will not be made public.

The agreement ends an international scandal that forced Strauss-Kahn, 63, to resign and scuttled his hopes of running for president in his native France.

It's announcing revamped versions of its Sound Rise, Sound Step, Sound Step Recharge and the Sound Platform 2 -- which will now play nicely with the new 16-pin connection. The new range will get a first airing at CES before hitting stores next year, the $150 Sound Platform 2 arriving exclusively at Target on February 17th, with the others expected to arrive by Spring.

Youth video raises awareness of domestic violence - mySteinbach.ca

A new video demonstrates that young men have a role to play in speaking out against domestic and gender-related violence, and breaking the cycle of violence. This announcement was made by Family Services and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard, minister responsible for the status of women.

?Children and youth exposed to domestic violence may grow up thinking this behaviour is normal and acceptable,? said Howard. ?This video speaks to them in a style they are familiar with and shows them how to break the cycle of violence in their own future relationships.?

The Manitoba government provided a grant to the Broadway Neighbourhood Centre for the development of the video.

?We know that the youth we work with need to have their own voice on issues that affect them. Prevention starts with children and youth, and it is important to provide the tools for them to make positive choices,? said executive director Lawrence ?Spatch? Mulhall.

The video shows how domestic violence in the home can affect the attitudes of children who are powerless to stop the violence and are confused by their sadness and anger. Without even realizing it, they can reflect the same violent behaviour they witness at home in their own relationships unless they break the cycle, said Howard.

The minister noted, while domestic violence is experienced by all age groups, dating violence is even more common than spousal violence. The majority of victims are women and girls (approximately 80 per cent).

The province recently launched the first phase of the Break the Silence campaign that featured members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers speaking out against violence against women. These campaigns are part of a new, multi-year domestic violence prevention strategy released by the province.

Egypt military warns of 'dark tunnel' over divisions

As protests continued, President Mohammed Morsi rescinded a controversial decree he issued weeks ago, assuming control of the judiciary. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

CAIRO -- Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on Saturday issued a decree annulling the most controversial parts of earlier orders that granted him sweeping powers, including the ability to make laws and decisions that are not subject to judicial reviews.

The earlier orders had led to three weeks of violent clashes between Morsi supporters and the political opposition.

The president no longer has absolute powers, but his government's draft constitution will stand in its current form and will not be subject to change before a referendum set for Dec. 15, NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reported from Cairo.

The new declaration still calls for the referendum to go ahead as scheduled, but the new referendum will not be a simple "yes" or "no."

If the draft constitution is rejected, Morsi said he will ask the public to directly vote for a new 100-member constituent assembly to write a new constitution. The existing 100-member assembly was appointed by the dissolved parliament.?

Earlier Saturday,?Egypt's military warned of "disastrous consequences" if the crisis that sent tens of thousands of protesters back into the streets was not resolved, signaling the army's return to an increasingly polarized and violent political scene.

The military said serious dialogue is the "best and only" way to overcome the nation's deepening conflict.

"Anything other than that (dialogue) will force us into a dark tunnel with disastrous consequences; something which we won't allow," the statement said.

Failing to reach a consensus "is in the interest of neither side. The nation as a whole will pay the price," it added. The statement was read by an unnamed military official on state television.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin and journalist Mona Eltahawy discuss developments around Egypt's crisis.

Egypt's once all-powerful military, which temporarily took over governing the country after the revolution that ousted autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak, has largely been sidelined since handing over power to Morsi weeks after his election.

But it has begun asserting itself again, with soldiers sealing off the presidential palace with tanks and barbed wire, as rival protests and street battles between Morsi's supporters and his opponents turned increasingly violent.

The statement said the military "realizes its national responsibility in protecting the nation's higher interests" and state institutions.

At least six civilians have been killed and several offices of the president's Muslim Brotherhood set on fire since the crisis began on Nov. 22. The two sides also have staged a number of sit-ins around state institutions, including the presidential palace where some of the most violent clashes occurred.

Images of the military's elite Republican Guards unit surrounding the area around the palace showed one of the most high-profile troop deployment since the army handed over power to Morsi on June 30.

Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi is feeling the pressure ever since his decree granting him nearly absolute powers. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

A sit-in by Morsi's opponents around the palace continued Saturday, with protesters setting up roadblocks with tanks behind them amid reports that the president's supporters planned rival protests. By midday Saturday, TV footage showed the military setting up a new wall of cement blocks around the palace.

Tensions have escalated since Morsi issued new decrees granting himself and an Islamist-dominated constitutional assembly immunity from oversight by the judiciary. The president's allies then rushed through a constitution and he announced a Dec. 15 nationwide referendum on the charter.

The president has insisted his decrees were meant to protect the country's transition to democracy from former regime figures trying to derail it.
