Spain's economy contracts third quarter in a row

MADRID (AP) ? Spain's National Statistics Institute says the Spanish economy remains mired in recession after contracting 0.4 percent in the second quarter of the year from the previous three month period.

It was the third consecutive contraction following the previous two 0.3 percent quarterly declines.

A technical recession is commonly defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

The institute said Monday the second quarter decline was due to negative domestic demand, compensated somewhat by an increase in exports.

Spain with near 25 percent unemployment is struggling to avoid having to seek a financial bailout, as Greece, Ireland and Portugal have already done.

Solo won't back down from Twitter comments

MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? U.S. women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo didn't back down Monday from her Twitter outburst against NBC analyst Brandi Chastain, saying the tweets were her way of expressing her opinion about the quality of television announcers.

Solo addressed the matter briefly on her 31st birthday during the team's tour of historic Old Trafford stadium, where the Americans will play North Korea on Tuesday. She didn't apologize or express regret, and she answered only one question about the matter, declining to address, among other things, whether a social media rant in the middle of the Olympics was the proper time and means to convey her feelings about broadcasters.

"It's not about what made me unhappy," Solo said. "It's not about one game. I have my beliefs that the best commentators and the best analysts should be analyzing come Olympics, come World Cups, and it's only my opinion. You can take it or leave it, to be honest, so it's my opinion, and I think analysts and commentators should bring energy and excitement and passion for the game, and a lot of knowledge, and I think it's important to help build the game, and I don't think Brandi has that.

"It's just my opinion, and nothing else really matters, to be honest. What matters is tomorrow's game against North Korea, playing at Old Trafford. The team's excited. It's my birthday. I don't really care to answer any other questions about Brandi."

She indeed declined to answer follow-up questions about the matter, including whether she has spoken to Chastain.

Solo's words prompted NBC Sports to weigh in for the first time, releasing a statement in support of its announcer.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer such complete and compelling coverage of the entire Olympic soccer tournament, and Brandi has been doing an outstanding job," NBC spokesman Adam Freifeld said. "We wish the U.S. women's team the best of luck."

Solo railed against Chastain's commentary following the Americans' 3-0 win over Colombia on Saturday, upset over Chastain's criticisms of the team's defensive play. She tweeted that Chastain should "lay off commentating about defending" and goalkeeping "until you get more educated" and "the game has changed from a decade ago."

The outburst led to a meeting with Solo, coach Pia Sundhage and the team captains on Sunday, with the coach expressing concern about how the tweets reflected on the team's image and the need to cut out distractions and focus on the next game. The coach did not tell Solo to stop tweeting.

Solo has never been shy about expressing opinions. Her criticism of then-coach Greg Ryan got her kicked off the 2007 World Cup team. She's also been promoting a memoir that is scheduled for release two days after the Olympics.

Chastain, one of the most accomplished players in U.S. team history, has refused to be drawn into the dispute, saying Monday that she's doing her job as an "honest and objective journalist at the Olympics."

The Solo-Chastain saga has been a diversion from the buildup to a historic match. About 35,000 fans are expected Tuesday, which would be a record for a women's game at the home of Manchester United. The stadium hasn't hosted a women's match since 1989.

"You can see why they talk of all the magic inside. It's pretty amazing," midfielder Megan Rapinoe said after the players spent about 20 minutes taking photos at midfield. "Walking into the changing rooms and seeing all the trophies and legends, it's pretty cool."

The Americans won their first two games and have already clinched a berth in the next round, but they'll want a victory to sustain momentum and get a better draw in the quarterfinals.

Midfielder Shannon Boxx, who injured her right hamstring in the opening win over France, will miss her second consecutive game.

LASIK Surgery is Not Appropriate for Everyone - My Medical Fitness ...

New York, NY, July 31, 2012 ?(PR.com)? While modern LASIK vision correction methods can cure nearsightedness and farsightedness in many adults, LASIK surgery is not appropriate for everyone.

Dr. Ilan Cohen, director of 5th Avenue Eye Center in Manhattan, helps people throughout New York and New Jersey with his ground-breaking LASIK and cataract surgical procedures. However, he is concerned that the general public believes LASIK surgery is appropriate for virtually any adult with vision problems.

?For some people, LASIK could bring more problems than solutions,? Dr. Cohen said. ?Unfortunately, I?ve had an increasing number of calls for help from people who went to another doctor and had a LASIK procedure that really should not have been performed to begin with.?

No one under the age of 18 should get LASIK surgery because their eyes are still developing, Dr. Cohen explained. Ideally, a patient should be at least 21 years old. People whose eyeglasses or contact prescriptions frequently change are probably not good candidates for LASIK and should wait until their prescriptions become more stable.

?Also, LASIK surgery is not a treatment for cataracts, which are a film over the eye that clouds vision and can lead to blindness,? Dr. Cohen said. ?Removing a cataract is an entirely different procedure than LASIK.?

People with health problems such as diabetes, glaucoma, herpes of the eye, or rheumatoid arthritis are also poor candidates for LASIK surgery. Anyone with an irregularly shaped or thin cornea is not a good candidate for LASIK and those who have dry eyes should consider not getting the procedure.

?Almost anyone can live a good life using eyeglasses or contact lenses,? Dr. Cohen said. ?So, if you do not meet the ideal patient profile for LASIK correction, please do not feel discouraged. Wearing glasses or contacts is far less of an inconvenience than the potential problems of getting LASIK surgery from someone who just wants your money and is not that concerned about your future health.?

5th Avenue Eye Center is a comprehensive vision clinic with branches in Manhattan and Queens, New York as well as New Jersey. Dr. Cohen received his degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Mass., and was fellowship trained in corneal surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. His innovative LASIK and cataract surgical techniques and ability to correct other surgeons? mistakes have garnered international media attention on CBS, CNBC, and FOX News. Dr. Cohen teaches LASIK surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Hacker can unscramble coded Web traffic for $200

A hacking expert has launched a $200 password-cracking tool that makes it easy to decipher Internet traffic sent through a widely used method for securing businesses communications.

Moxie Marlinspike, one of the world's top encryption experts, unveiled the tool on Saturday during a presentation at the Def Con hacking conference in Las Vegas.

Marlinspike said he developed the service, CloudCracker.com, by taking advantage of a vulnerability he discovered in a widely used virtual private network technology known as point-to-point tunneling protocol.

Virtual private networks, or VPNs, scramble traffic as it travels between a PC and its final destination so that the data is useless to hackers if they eavesdrop on those communications.

But Marlinspike provides clients with a tool that analyzes captured data streams and creates a data file that they upload to his website. He then runs that through code-cracking computer programs that figure out a password that will unscramble the protected communications. He delivers that to clients within 24 hours.

With access to web traffic, hackers could potentially steal passwords to financial accounts, read business emails and learn business secrets.

Marlinspike said he will not screen clients to determine whether they are using CloudCracker for illegal purposes, although his ultimate intent is help computer users by pressuring operating systems makers to make their software safer.

"What we're trying to do is force people to use more secure VPN technology in the products they are building," he said.

Marlinspike said that small to mid-sized businesses and consumers typically use VPN software with the point-to-point tunneling protocol.

Large corporations typically supply their employees with VPN software from Cisco Systems Inc, whose communications cannot be cracked by CloudCracker.com, he said.

Marlinspike has worked for Twitter since the end of last year when the mobile blogging service acquired a company he co-founded, Whisper Systems. Marlinspike said that CloudCracker.com was a personal project and has nothing to do with Twitter.

Hackers and security experts present research on a wide range of vulnerabilities in products ranging from computers and networking equipment to locks, drones and air-traffic control systems at the annual Def Con gathering.

They often publicize their work in an effort to warn the public about security risks and pressure manufacturers to address the problems.

Wall Street likely to continue hopeful mood

NEW YORK -- Stocks took off at the end of the week, drawn by the allure of a helping hand from the world's two most powerful central banks. Traders are unlikely to resist those charms again next week.

The U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank both meet next week amid investor expectations of action to stimulate economic growth and, in the case of the ECB, tackle the spreading euro zone debt crisis.

The drumbeat of weak economic data and disappointing U.S. corporate profits and outlooks mean central banks can be stocks' best friends.

Equity prices tend to rise sharply in the hours before a Fed statement like the one expected on Wednesday as traders and investors jockey for position and a chance to make a profit.

Next week's calendar has a double-whammy. The Fed's monetary policy statement will come one day before an ECB meeting packed with intrigue. ECB President Mario Draghi said earlier this week the bank was ready to do whatever was necessary, within its mandate, to save the euro.

"People in this business like to get in front of big events, especially if (they) could be very, very positive for the market," said Brian Reynolds, chief market strategist at agency brokerage Rosenblatt Securities.

In that sense the strategy "is almost like a lottery ticket," he said.

But was that ticket already cashed? The S&P 500 rallied to levels not seen since May on Friday, a rally that was sparked a day earlier after Draghi stoked expectations the ECB might resume its Securities Markets Programme (SMP) and possibly adopt more aggressive quantitative easing.

Reports of meetings with the head of Germany's Bundesbank fueled a Friday rally that outpaced Thursday's gains.

Equity markets have for weeks been leaning on hoped-for stimulus from the Fed or ECB. Despite weeks of softening economic data, including a dismal payrolls report for June and a poor outlook for corporate profits, the S&P 500 has risen in seven of the past 10 weeks. It closed on Friday near a three-month high.

At the same time that traders position themselves to benefit from the Fed's latest easy-money policy, those betting against market gains get out of the way and selling pressure recedes.

"It's very scary to short the market ahead of a Fed meeting," said Dennis Dick, a proprietary trader at Las Vegas-based Bright Trading and co-founder of Premarketinfo.com. "So you have this short-covering that drives prices up."

That helps explain the rise in stocks in the 24 hours prior to the U.S. central bank's policy decisions -- a pattern that tends to hold irrespective of what the Fed actually says in its statement.

Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York performed a study of the pattern.

Starting mid-afternoon the day before such decisions, stocks in the United States, Britain, Germany and other major markets begin a sharp rise and don't stop, on average, until just before the Fed unveils its policy decision at 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) the following day.

Since 1994 a whopping 80 percent of the premium in gains of U.S. stocks over yields on short-term government bonds has been earned in these 24-hour periods, the study found.

The pattern has grown starker as the Fed took increasingly aggressive actions to rescue the U.S. economy from recession. The two rounds of major asset purchases, known as quantitative easing, or QE1 and QE2, in recent years strongly boosted stocks.

"Perhaps this shows markets have given the Fed their seal of approval," said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.

"At least from a market participant perspective, they are confident the Fed will fulfill its mandate. I try to talk to individual investors to remind them that the stock market is going to react much more quickly than the economy to what the Fed does," he said.

The focus on central bank meetings will get in the way of a heavy week of earnings for S&P 500 companies at a time when the outlook continues to worsen.

Major companies due to report include AIG , Kellogg , Procter & Gamble
, Kraft Foods , Pfizer
, MasterCard and General Motors.

Among the 290 companies in the S&P 500 index that have reported earnings for the second quarter, about 67 percent have beaten analysts' estimates, slightly higher than the long-term average of about 62 percent.

But just 40 percent have beaten on revenues, the worst record since the first quarter of 2009.

More worrisome is the market's outlook. Third-quarter earnings are now expected to decline 0.4 percent from a year ago, compared with an expected rise of 1.4 percent last week, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Also on investors' radar next week is another legal battle in California over patents between Apple and South Korea's Samsung. The trial's outcome could reshape the smartphone and tablet wars between the iPhone's maker and its rivals.

Qatari girl scared by Games bow

Table tennis player Aia Mohamed joined shooter Bahia Al Hamad as one of the first Qatari women to compete in an Olympic Games but admitted she was frightened by her history-making bow.

Aia lost a preliminary round match by 11-3, 11-7, 11-6, 11-3 to Zhang Mo of Canada, a China-born former world top 100 player.

"I was really afraid. I didn't know how to play," Aia admitted.

Whether her performance was affected by her late night after the opening ceremony was something about which she would not be drawn.

"I wasn't expecting to be at the parade of nations and I was very proud to be there. I saw the rest (of the evening's ceremony) on TV and I thought it was really nice."

She also maintained a suitably positive attitude about what she will take from the defeat.

"I'm feeling good. I've learnt a lot," she said. "It was a huge game so it is normal to be afraid but I will keep practising hard for the future."

Aia Mohamed and Al Hamda, who was defeated in the air rifle shooting event, are not the only women competing for Qatar at the Olympics.

Sprinter Noor Al-Malki and swimmer Nada Arakji will also represent the small but wealthy Gulf nation.

The Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee named two women, judo competitor Wodjan Shaherkhani and runner Sarah Attar, to represent their nation in London.

But Shaherkhani's place in the tournament is in danger after she was told she cannot wear the Islamic hijab headscarf when she fights as it contravenes competition rules.

Martin Sheen To Join 'Anger Management' If FX Sitcom Gets 90-Episode Pickup

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? Charlie Sheen says he's not insane anymore.

Instead, these are good days for the "Anger Management" star, he declares, with his FX sitcom half-way through its initial 10-episode run and poised to get an order for 90 more.

Sheen told reporters Saturday that the prospect of continuing is as "exciting as hell," and added cheerily, "I don't think 90's gonna be enough."

With the expected pickup, FX plans to bring aboard Sheen's dad, Martin Sheen, as a regular cast member. He will play the father of Charlie Goodson, the anger-management therapist played by Charlie Sheen. The veteran movie actor, who also played President Jed Bartlet on the drama series "The West Wing," is guest-starring on an "Anger Management" episode that airs Aug. 16.

"I think that was the best episode we did," his son said.

Adding Sheen pere to the series "will give an extra dimension and make it a multi-generational family show," said FX boss John Landgraf in making the announcement.

The production schedule would call for filming a total of 100 episodes in just two years. This kind of cost-saving routine means no time for rehearsals, said executive producer Bruce Helford.

"The actors get the lines, we see the scene, the writers make changes, the actors go to makeup, cameras are blocked, we come back together and shoot the scene," he explained.

At first, the cast members "felt like basically they were on the ledge. But by the third episode, everyone found the characters to the point that the writers were following their lead," Helford said.

"I feel like how we started, we just scratched the surface ? barely," said Sheen, who arrived for his appearance at the Television Critics Association session clad in Bermuda shorts, a long-sleeve shirt and loafers without socks.

He likened his tumultuous departure from "Two and a Half Men" and the stormy aftermath last year to a dream he couldn't wake up from. Or like "a train I couldn't get off of, except that I was the conductor," he added, speaking in quick bursts and fidgeting in his chair.

He said he learned a lot from that period, including "stick to what you know." Referring to his disastrous "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option" tour in spring 2011, he got laughs from the group when he advised, "Don't go on the road with a one-man show in 21 cities without an act. "

"I'm not insane anymore," he summed up.

What's different now from Sheen's angry stretch on "Men," characterized by his much-publicized clashes with series creator Chuck Lorre?

Helford weighed in with a theory. On "Men," he ventured, "Charlie didn't really have a voice with creative input. It wasn't built that way."

On "Anger Management," Helford said he's forged a partnership with his star.

"We built this together," he said. "And when Charlie's on the stage, that's his stage. When you feel that, your creative juices are flowing, everything is better for you, because you have a say in what you're doing.

"When you don't control your destiny, things get screwed up in your head," he said as Sheen nodded.

On "Anger Management," Charlie Goodson thrives on chaos. Sheen was asked if he does, too, or if he longs for a simpler life.

"I can wish every minute for a simple life. It's not gonna happen," Sheen replied. "But I don't really look at it as chaos. I look at it as challenges."

Drink lobby gears up to fight soda tax plan in California city

(Reuters) - Beverage industry groups are planning ways to oppose a proposed soda tax in the California city of El Monte because of fears other U.S. cities across America might adopt similar taxes on sugary drinks.

The El Monte city council on Tuesday approved a measure that would add a 1 cent tax for every ounce of "sugar sweetened" drinks. The proposal is scheduled to be voted on by city residents in November's election.

El Monte's mayor said the tax would provide badly needed revenue for a city that has been forced to slash its workforce to save money, and would help fight obesity in a city where half the children have weight problems.

Industry groups quickly said they will marshal forces to kill off the measure. They already are fighting a similar tax proposed two months ago by the city of Richmond, California.

"Even if those don't pass in November, there could certainly be the potential of future tax threats in other cities," Karen Hanretty, vice-president of public affairs for the American Beverage Association, said.

"We will support any 'no' campaign," Hanretty said.

Rising deficits have forced three California cities to file or plan bankruptcy petitions since June. The city council of San Bernardino voted on July 19 to seek Chapter 9 protection.

"This tax is a sign of the times," said Bob Achermann, executive director of the California/Nevada Soft Drink Association, said. "City governments are looking for revenue. We think this is a misguided approach."

El Monte's mayor, Andre Quintero, said his city is not facing bankruptcy and had managed to balance its budget for fiscal year 2013.

But in a city with 13.7 per cent unemployment, far exceeding the national average of 8.1 per cent, El Monte cut its workforce from 420 employees to 290 in the past four years.

"We have long-term challenges," Quintero said. "We need the revenue."

With more Americans concerned about obesity, especially in children, the campaign against soft-drinks is gaining momentum from coast to coast.

In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a ban on large sodas, the first of its kind in the nation, which New York's Board of Health is expected to pass in September.

Bloomberg's proposal would limit servings of sugary drinks to 16 ounces (473 ml) at most restaurants, theaters, delis, vending carts and stadium concessions.

A state-wide soda tax proposal last year by Democratic Californian assemblyman Bill Monning failed after vigorous opposition from a broad coalition including the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Restaurant Association.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is reaffirming U.S. ties with Israel, upstaging Mitt Romney one day before the Republican challenger visits Jerusalem.

The White House says Obama will sign legislation Friday that expands military and civilian cooperation with Israel. The bill passed by voice vote in the House last week. The bill reiterates U.S. support for a negotiated two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Romney is a critic of Obama's policy toward Israel. He arrives in Jerusalem on Saturday on an overseas trip that includes Britain and Poland.

The White House subtly injected itself into Romney's trip on Thursday after Romney caused a stir by calling London's problems with Olympics preparation "disconcerting."

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama "has the utmost confidence" in Britain's ability to host the games.

Exposure to Cell Phone Radiation Part 3 - mobile-phones-radiation

www. emfnews. org www. emfnews. org www. emfnews. org Our conclusion: The current U.S. cell phone radiation standards, by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) specified and largely based on 1992 mobile phone industry recommendations, are outdated and thus 20 times more radiation to penetrate the head than the rest of the body. EC urges the FCC to adapt their standards to have the latest scientific knowledge and increasing mobile phone use by children. ?The first mobile phones were marketed for adults,? said Naidenko. ?But the kids today are just as likely a cell phone like a video game, baseball or possess a bicycle.? According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the cell phone use among U.S. children aged between 12 and 17 years old followed, last year (2008) 71 percent of tweens and teens owned cell phones. More than half use the device daily. EC urges concerned consumers to take action and say the federal government, that mobile phone manufacturers should be required to disclose to any phone, the radiation power on the label. The report also offers safety tips to reduce cell phone radiation. Among them: ? Use headset and the handsfree option, if available. ? more text to talk less. ? Stay off the phone when some bars indicate a weak signal. EEC, the new interactive database on the technical specifications of the phone is currently based on the market and some older models can be searched by model. www. emfnews. org www. emfnews. org www. emfnews. org

Germany welcomes ECB promise to secure euro

(AP) ? Germany's finance minister on Friday welcomed a pledge by the European Central Bank's president to do what is needed to save the euro, though he also stressed that politicians must themselves act to resolve countries' problems.

Mario Draghi said Thursday the ECB would "do whatever it takes to preserve the euro." His comments raised expectations he could step in to lower high borrowing costs for countries like Spain and Italy ? possibly by buying government bonds.

The ECB has bought bonds to fight the crisis over the past two years, but has kept the program on pause for months. The bond purchases were not popular in Germany, which feared the ECB was taking on excessive risk and claimed governments should bear the responsibility of restoring confidence in their economies by reducing public debt.

A ministry statement Friday said Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble welcomes Draghi's pledge to "take the necessary measures to secure the euro in the framework of the existing ECB mandate."

"The condition for this is that policymakers also take and implement the necessary measures to deal with the financial and confidence crisis," it added. "In the first place stand the reform efforts of the countries themselves."

The statement went on to list efforts that Spain and Italy have embarked on to get their budgets in order and embark on structural reforms, and said that programs launched by Portugal and Ireland in exchange for bailouts "are on the right track." It didn't mention Greece.

The Finance Ministry did not say anything about what measures the ECB might take.
