Few things scare me more than disk partitioning and GRUB configuration software. Both of those chores involve knowledge about hard drive operations and a good slice of luck. Short Biography: Russell never really had a childhood. His mother was always in and out of the local hospital due to being diagnosed with the white plague (Tuberculosis) His father was old and frail, Russell did most of the work around the house. Tending to the animals, tending to his parents, working as many spare jobs as possible to provide the family with enough money to survive, even when, for a small period of time, he had smuggled liquor to local underground clubs and hideouts. When his parents passed away when he was only fourteen, the circus was in town. The ringmaster made him feel at home. That is, in the stables. Russell had no talents, and he was always into trouble that he was sentenced to manure duty for a majority of his teenage years. Now he's permanently a stable hand, and as long as he keeps his nose clean, he has a home.

Appearance: Pippa is your average beauty. She had wavy golden hair that framed a flawless heart shaped face. Her eyes always seemed to be bright and full of amazement. Her beauty was undeniable. Her legs are long and slender, with petite feet that always seem to dance, she is never seen being completely still. Pippa is viewed as one of the "Golden Girls" of the circus.

Truth be told, Pippa was actually the granddaughter of a circus performer and a common thug. Her great, great grandmother was raped in her late years as a performer. Pippa keeps this as a secret however for she loves being high up on the social ladder of the circus.

Travel Insurance Woes

Some of you may recall that in February I had my rucksack stolen on the train into Geneva Airport. Key items taken were an SLR camera, video camera, mobile 'phone and clothing. These were covered by a combination of my Ecclesiastical Home Contents and a major brand Travel Insurance. Whilst Ecclesiastical have been brilliant ? operating over email and accepting scanned documents ? my other insurer (with only 1/3rd the value in liability) has been a nightmare - insisting on paper-based forms, letters, and an endless cycle of requests for clarification and the same information multiple times.

Many of you will be renewing your travel insurance over the summer, so here is some advice based on my (continuing) battle with my travel insurer:

You may have a Big Name insurance retailer, but the travel claim is likely to be handled by one man, an aged PC and four underpaid teenagers in a dingy office. The sole target of the claims handler is to stretch out the claims process to the point where you give up.

* Buy travel insurance from a retailer who is underwritten by a major insurer who does their own claims handling. No subcontracted claims management.

Even the best insurance companies only have a 5-day turn-around policy. You submit something ? they wait 5 days to reply ? they ask for clarification ? you reply ? they wait 5 days ?. and so on. Any and every inconsistency and omission will be dragged out. Moreover, your policy will have a maximum claim total ? if a few items hit this ceiling anyway, then don't cloud it with trivia that just gives them an excuse to prevaricate.

* Only claim for Big Ticket items that you have full receipts and documentation for. Forget about stolen/lost gloves, pyjamas, plug adapters etc.

* You need documentation for everything. And even then it may not be acceptable. In particular you must have

Police Report + Full Inventory of Stolen Items.
Airline Report + Full inventory of Damaged/lost goods.
Proof of Travel
Original Invoices/Charges (how many of you have the original invoices handy for everything? Really?)

* Try and determine up-front just what is acceptable documentation. This will save endless cycles of submission/clarification.

* Think how you will handle the old "We have no proof of ever having received this ?" ? If at all possible retain original receipts.

* Proof of Travel ? Clarify just what constitutes Proof of Travel. An easyJet Boarding Pass? A web invoice?

Communicate by letter so you have documentary evidence. Remember the 5-Day rule.
Telephoning is OK for preparation, but while in submission, no one will recall what is said

Folk musician Doc Watson dies in NC hospital at 89

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Doc Watson, the blind Grammy-award winning folk musician whose music was embraced by generations and whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world, died Tuesday at a North Carolina hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his manager. He was 89.

Watson died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was hospitalized recently after falling at his home in Deep Gap, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He underwent abdominal surgery while in the hospital and had been in critical condition for several days.

Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.

Richard Watson said in a 2000 interview with The Associated Press that his grandfather's playing had a humbling effect on other musicians. The ever-humble Doc Watson found it hard to believe.

"Everybody that's picked with you says you intimidate them, and that includes some of the best," Richard Watson told him.

Country and bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs said Tuesday evening, "An old ancient warrior has gone home."

"He prepared all of us to carry this on," Skaggs added. "He knew he wouldn't last forever, He did his best to carry the old mountain sounds to this generation."

Doc Watson was born March 3, 1923 in Deep Gap. He lost his eyesight by the age of 1 when he developed an eye infection that was worsened by a congenital vascular disorder, according to a website for Merlefest, the annual musical gathering named for his late son Merle.

He came from a musical family ? his father was active in the church choir and played banjo and his mother sang secular and religious songs, according to a statement from Folklore Productions, his management company since 1964.

Doc Watson's father gave him a harmonica as a young child, and by 5 he was playing the banjo, according to the Merlefest website. He learned a few guitar chords while attending the North Carolina Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, and his father helped him buy a Stella guitar for $12.

"My real interest in music was the old 78 records and the sound of the music," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the website. "I loved it and began to realize that one of the main sounds on those old records I loved was the guitar."

The wavy-haired Watson got his musical start in 1953, playing electric lead guitar in a country-and-western swing band. His road to fame began in 1960 when Ralph Rinzler, a musician who also managed Bill Monroe, discovered Watson in North Carolina. That led Watson to the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 and his first recording contract a year later. He went on to record 60 albums, and wowed fans ranging from 60s hippies to fans of traditional country and folk music.

According to the Encyclopedia of Country Music, Watson took his nickname at age 19 when someone couldn't pronounce his name and a girl in the audience shouted "Call him Doc!"

Seven of his albums won Grammy awards; his eighth Grammy was a lifetime achievement award in 2004. He also received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1997.

"There may not be a serious, committed baby boomer alive who didn't at some point in his or her youth try to spend a few minutes at least trying to learn to pick a guitar like Doc Watson," Clinton said at the time.

Folklore described Watson as "a powerful singer and a tremendously influential picker who virtually invented the art of playing mountain fiddle tunes on the flattop guitar."

Doc Watson's son Merle began recording and touring with him in 1964. But Merle Watson died at age 36 in a 1985 tractor accident, sending his father into deep grief and making him consider retirement. Instead, he kept playing and started Merlefest, an annual musical event in Wilkesboro, N.C., that raises money for a community college there and celebrates "traditional plus" music.

"When Merle and I started out we called our music 'traditional plus,' meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the festival's website. "Since the beginning, the people of the college and I have agreed that the music of MerleFest is 'traditional plus.'"

Doc Watson has said that when Merle died, he lost the best friend he would ever have.

He also relied on his wife, Rosa Lee, whom he married in 1947.

"She saw what little good there was in me, and there was little," Watson told the AP in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."

In a PBS NewsHour interview before a January appearance in Arlington, Va., Watson recalled his father teaching him how to play harmonica to a tune his parents had sung in church, as well as his first bus trip to New York City. Telling the stories in a folksy manner, he broke into a quiet laugh at various points. He said he still enjoyed touring.

"I love music and love a good audience and still have to make a living," Watson said. "Why would I quit?"

Musician Sam Bush, who has performed at every Merlefest, began touring with Doc and Merle Watson in 1974, occasionally substituting for Merle when he couldn't travel.

"I would sit next to Doc, and I would be influenced by his incredible timing and taste," Bush said after Watson's recent surgery. "He seems to always know what notes to play. They're always the perfect notes. He helped me learn the space between the notes (are) as valuable as the ones you play."

Bush said he was also intimidated when he began playing with the man he calls "the godfather of all flatpickers."

"But Doc puts you at ease about that kind of stuff," Bush said. "I never met a more generous kind of musician. He is more about the musical communication than showing off with hot licks."

His blindness didn't hold him back musically or at home.

Joe Newberry, a musician and spokesman for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, remembered once when his wife called the Watson home. Rosa Lee Watson said her husband was on the roof, replacing shingles. His daughter Nancy Watson said her father built the family's utility shed.

Guitarist Pete Huttlinger of Nashville, Tenn., said Doc Watson made every song his own, regardless of its age. 'He's one of those lucky guys," said Huttlinger, who studied Watson's methods when he first picked up a guitar. "When he plays something, he puts his stamp on it ? it's Doc Watson."

He changed folk music forever by adapting fiddle tunes to guitar at amazing tempos, Huttlinger said. "And people all over the place were trying to figure out how to do this," he said. "But Doc, he set the bar for everyone. He said, 'This is how it goes.' And people have been trying for years to match that.

"He took it (the guitar) out of the background and brought it upfront as a melody instrument. We're no longer at the back of the class. He gave the front to us."

Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said recently that Watson took southern Appalachian forms of music such as balladry, old-time string music and bluegrass, and made them accessible.

"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."

Said Bush: "I don't think anyone personifies what we call Americana more than Doc Watson."

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said in a statement Tuesday evening that Watson will be missed.

"Over his long and brilliant career, Doc Watson traveled the world playing the music he loved, but his heart never strayed far from his home in Deep Gap, N.C.," Perdue said. "Our state was fortunate to have such a worldwide ambassador of North Carolina's culture and heritage."

In 2011, a life-size statue of Watson was dedicated in Boone, N.C., at the spot where Watson had played decades earlier for tips to support his family, according to the Folklore statement. At Watson's request the inscription read, "Just One of the People."

In a study that spanned almost 20 years, researchers found that overall colorectal cancer mortality (deaths) was reduced by 26% and incidence (new cases) was reduced by 21% as a result of screening with sigmoidoscopy. These results appeared online on May 21, 2012, in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Sigmoidoscopy involves examination of the lower colon using a thin, flexible sigmoidoscope, to view the anus, rectum, and sigmoid colon. It has fewer side effects, requires less bowel preparation and poses a lower risk of bowel perforation than colonoscopy.

The most important message is that, regardless of modality chosen, colorectal cancer screening lowers mortality from colorectal cancer, and all individuals 50 and over should be screened.

From 1993 to 2001, a total of 154,900 men and women aged 55 through 74 were randomly assigned to receive flexible sigmoidoscopy screening or usual care as part of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening trial. People in the usual care group (i.e. control group) only received screening if they asked for it, or if their physician recommended it. This large population-based randomized trial was designed to determine the effects of screening on cancer-related mortality. Participants assigned to the flexible sigmoidoscopy group were screened once on entering the study (baseline) and again three years to five years later. The participants were followed for approximately 12 years to collect data on cancer diagnoses and deaths.

Overall, after an average of nearly 12 years, participants in the screening group had a 21% lower incidence of colorectal cancer overall and a 26% lower rate of colorectal cancer mortality than participants in the usual care group. This means that, over the course of 10 years, if 1,000 people followed the PLCO protocol of two sigmoidoscopy screenings, there would be approximately three fewer new cases and one fewer death from colorectal cancer than in a comparable group not receiving regular screenings.
? The incidence of distal colorectal cancer was reduced by 29%, and mortality from distal colorectal cancer was reduced by 50%, in the screening group.
? While there was no statistically significant decline in deaths from proximal colorectal cancer, the incidence of proximal colorectal cancer was reduced by 14% in the screening group.

?This is the second major trial that has shown that sigmoidoscopy is effective in reducing the risk of dying of colorectal cancer. Sigmoidoscopy is less invasive than colonoscopy and carries a lower risk of the colon being perforated, which may make it more acceptable as a screening test to some patients,? said Barnett Kramer, M.D., director of NCI?s Division of Cancer Prevention. ?There are several effective screening tests for colorectal cancer, and the most effective screening test is the one that people choose to take.?

The researchers estimated that if they had used colonoscopy rather than sigmoidoscopy in this study, they would have identified 16% more cancers, two-thirds of which would have been proximal cancers. However, they were not able to determine what effect that may have had on proximal colorectal cancer mortality. There has been some controversy about how effective colonoscopy is in decreasing colorectal cancer mortality in different regions of the colon, with some studies suggesting that it is more effective against distal than proximal tumors. Sigmoidoscopy has never been directly compared to colonoscopy in a definitive clinical trial.

False-positive sigmoidoscopy results were observed in 20% of men and 13% of women in the screening group, but some of these false positives could have been the result of false-negative colonoscopies done to follow up on suspicious sigmoidoscopy findings. Among children 12 and over, they now report, 14 percent have high blood pressure or pre-hypertension; 22 percent have borderline-high or high concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ? the so-called bad type; 6 percent have low concentrations of the good cholesterol (the high-density-lipoprotein type); and 15 percent have diabetes or prediabetes. Although general risk factors for heart-health remained unchanged throughout the 9-year study period, incidence of diabetes and prediabetes more than doubled between 1999 to 2000 and 2007 to 2008. The CDC team?detailed its findings online May 21 in Pediatrics.

The diabetes-related trends stem from single, fasting blood-sugar readings from each child ? not an ideal assessment. So for now,?the authors recommend caution in interpreting these data.

Among children over 12, the study found, 49 percent of those who were overweight and 61 percent of those who were obese exhibited at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease ? in addition to their being too heavy. But even normal-weight kids were not home free: More than one in three also exhibited at least one cardiovascular risk factor.

The new data clearly indicate that?"a large proportion of adolescents, regardless of weight status, would benefit from . . . programs that promote overall healthy lifestyles, including physical activity, healthy diet, and healthy weight maintenance,? conclude the CDC?s Ashleigh May, Elena Kuklina and Paula Yoon. Not surprisingly, they also recommend that doctors pay more attention to the weight and activity levels of young patients.

But there?s a message in here for the rest of us as well. Parents and grandparents have to recognize that we?re doing the next generation no favor when we ignore the persistence of baby fat in children who are no longer babies. And if we allow this trend to persist unchecked, we?re soon going to jeopardize the ability of insurers to keep health care affordable for all as ever-larger numbers of youngsters develop?costly ? and preventable ? life-threatening conditions.
